Scammers are using your personal information for their crimes
In May 2023, a semi-retired couple from Melbourne shared their harrowing experience of becoming victims of sophisticated identity theft, losing a staggering $370,000 to fraudsters. While they were part of the Medibank and Latitude data breaches, they could not pinpoint exactly how the criminals obtained their driver’s license and passport details.
The impact of this breach was devastating. They saw $150,000 stolen from their Westpac accounts, $70,000 from Macquarie Bank, $50,000 from ANZ, and smaller amounts from Qantas travel cards, Kogan bank cards, and Bankfirst. The couple also received 20 new credit and debit cards in the mail, some with large balances already overdrawn. These accounts were opened at various banks, including Commonwealth Bank, UBank, and Bank of Queensland, among others.
One of the most disturbing parts of their ordeal was the discovery that John’s shares, worth around $45,000, were sold through CMC Markets, and $3,000 was withdrawn from his Commonwealth Bank account. In all, the criminals had access to almost every part of their financial life.
How did it happen?
According to Cassandra Cross, an Associate Professor at Queensland University of Technology, scammers could have pieced together various bits of personal information from data breaches like Medibank and Latitude, as well as from social media. These details, including your date of birth, driver’s license, phone number, and more, are the very keys to your identity. Once a cybercriminal has access to these, they can easily break into online accounts, apply for credit, and even impersonate you to perform illegal transactions.
This is where the true danger lies: it’s not just about hackers exploiting a system vulnerability. It’s about how your personal details can be stolen and used against you. The couple’s case is a chilling reminder that the breach of even seemingly small details, like your name, address, or passport number, can open the door to identity theft.
Sadly, this is not an isolated incident.
Scammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated in how they target victims. Whether through social engineering, phishing, or simply gathering information from public sources, criminals can easily gain access to your accounts, steal your money, and ruin your financial life. It doesn’t matter how strong your passwords or firewalls are if the person on the other end of the phone or email falls for a scam. A single human error can be enough for scammers to gain control of your most valuable personal details.
But it’s not just the big data breaches that pose a threat. Small pieces of personal information, like your phone number or your two-factor authentication credentials, can also be used to bypass security measures. For instance, John’s phone number was ported twice, despite having two-factor authentication, without raising any red flags. This shows just how effective these scammers can be, even when you think you’re protected.
In the wake of this fraud, some banks and financial institutions have reimbursed the couple, including Macquarie Bank and CMC Markets, but ANZ, Westpac, and NAB have yet to fully compensate them for the stolen funds at the time of writing this.
How Can You Protect Yourself from Identity Theft?
The truth is, you don’t have to be a tech expert to protect yourself. The first step is being vigilant and protecting your personal information. Here’s how you can take action:
- Limit the personal information you share online.
- Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) for all of your accounts.
- Monitor your financial accounts and lookout for unusual transactions.
- Shred documents that contain sensitive information.
- Be cautious of unsolicited calls, emails, or messages asking for your personal details.
